How much food should I serve for my event?


One of the trickiest things to do when planning a party, whether you are planning to do the cooking yourself or hiring a caterer, you have to know how much food to serve your guests. Many factors come in to play including the time and length of your party and the type of food you want to serve. While there is no fool-proof formula to determining the right amount, here’s a quick guide on exactly how much food to serve at a party.

1.  Breakfast – A morning event is often more casual than evening parties, the food options are also easier to choose from. For appetizers, fruit or a domestic cheese plate is often served, allow about 2 pieces per person. For the main dish, allocate one piece per person and about 1 to 2 servings of a side dish. A selection of breads and pastries (1-2/person) and an omelet bar is also an excellent choice. Allocate 1 round of non-alcoholic drinks and a round of coffee for each guest.

2.  Lunch – Lunch portioning is not that much different from breakfast, although the food choices will be different. Allow for 2 to 3 pieces of appetizers, depending on the size of each serving. A main dish of meat or fish and 1 to 2 side dishes plush some fresh rolls should be enough. For desserts, serve a slice of cake or 1-2 pieces of smaller bites like brownies or small fruit tarts.

3.  Barbecues – a backyard barbecue definitely needs more food than a sit-down meal. People will love to sample everything you may have on the grill so allocate at 1 piece per type of meat for each guest. The more grilled selections you have, the smaller you’re serving size can be. Serve about 3 types of side dishes and allocate one serving per guest. Don’t forget the snacks and munchies, allow at least 2 cups per person.

4.  Dinner – A dinner can either be a plated meal or a buffet service but often calls for heavier food. Allow at least 4 pieces of hors d’oeuvres for each guest, give an option for chicken fish or meat and allow to 1 to 2 serving of side dish. Don’t forget to factor in your alcoholic drinks. Depending on the length of the party, allow at least 2 glasses of alcoholic drinks for the first hour and 1 drink each, every hour after.
